Somehow, my raincoat is a symbol of everything I’ve been able to accomplish in the last year or so. I know that sounds silly, so let me fill in a little backstory.
I’ve wanted a decent raincoat for years. I’ve made do with jackets that are pretty much waterproof, or shells that don’t look like much. The raincoats I’ve coveted have been just too expensive to justify. If an umbrella and a different coat or jacket would do just as well, then I couldn’t allow myself to buy something that I would only use sporadically, and only at certain times of year.
And then, in June, 2019, I lost the decent-but-unexciting job I thought would see me to a safe retirement. The company ceased operations. At my age (64 then), and with my peculiarly diverse resume and seniority level, another job was not on the cards. I had very little savings for reasons too complicated and personal to explain here, so I took my social security early to give myself time to figure something out. I signed up as a ghost writer on Reedsy and Gotham Ghostwriters, did some freelance editing, and tried to get a business of some kind going.
That’s when I stumbled on Author Accelerator and @JennieNash. I attended a webinar, and everything she said just made perfect sense and I knew that book coaching was something I had to do. It was a big investment for me at that point, a real gamble. But I just had the feeling it…
